Meet the man behind the curtain!

By Leonard Lezama, Sponsorship Coordinator

Leonard Helping to make the drinking water well for the community of Santa Ana.

Meet Leo. Nearly 33 years ago, Leonard “Leo” Lezama was born in the town of Granada, where he still resides with his wife, Lisseth, their four-year-old daughter, Lizzy, and pets Lulu (dog), Limón (cat), and Leona (cat). Will the next family member’s name start with an L? :)

From a young age, Leo’s parents instilled in him the importance of serving and showing compassion for others. While he was studying at the University of Commercial Studies to become a computer science and telecommunications engineer, he took a job at a local NGO. Working alongside volunteers, the team provided access to safe, clean drinking water, taught health and hygiene classes, and shared the Gospel to poverty-stricken communities in Nicaragua. He knew this is the path he wanted to pursue, one that would positively impact and serve the lives of his fellow countrymen.

“ I am excited to see students achieve their goals and be part of the process.” -Leo

Today, Leo serves Empowerment International, EI, in the role of Child Sponsorship Coordinator where he supports, encourages, and witnesses the transformational effect education has on children. Unfortunately, there are students who do not finish High School or have the financial means to attend University. Through the Child Sponsorship program, students receive numerous benefits in addition to the educational support provided by EI thus allowing their students to achieve the level of education they desire. This is one of the reasons that drew Leo to EI in the first place, their mission to break the cycle of generational poverty through education.

“I learned that one of the most fundamental tools in empowering people is by investing in the education of children of the community since they are the future. This investment can bring permanent, positive change to the lives we want to help.” - Leo

Through EI’s educational efforts, the staff has seen a 97% annual school retention rate with students in their programs. To think what these students will be able to achieve because of education, the possibilities are limitless. Want to learn more about EI’s educational programs or interested in sponsoring a student?
